What to buy for a reading breakfast

A reading breakfast needs more than books and coffee. Plan breakfast food, hot drinks, tableware, serving equipment and clear allergen information for every registered participant. Use the final registration list to calculate quantities, then check chilled products and dietary requirements before shopping. Allow extra time for washing fruit, setting out food and preparing the reading corners so the morning starts calmly.

Tips

  • Plan breakfast portions from the final participant list, then add about 10% extra bread, fruit and spreads so late additions or larger appetites do not leave the buffet short.
  • For the first hour, allow roughly 2 cups of coffee or tea per person and keep hot water or drinks in thermos flasks for refills. Check that you have enough mugs, glasses and teaspoons before setting up.
  • Buy or collect books early enough to display them before guests arrive. Keep the read-aloud book separate and place bookends on the book tables so titles remain visible.
  • Prepare one allergen card for each dish and match it with the dietary requirements collected during registration. Finish the labels at least one day before the breakfast, not while guests are arriving.
  • Keep refrigerated products cold until serving and use food containers, cling film or aluminum foil for leftovers. Wash fruit before the event and set out small bowls and serving spoons with the buffet.

Frequently asked questions

How much food do I need for a reading breakfast?
Use the confirmed participant count and add about 10% extra for bread, fruit and spreads. For a two-hour breakfast, plan at least one breakfast plate and one bowl per person, plus serving dishes for each food item.
How many drinks should I buy for a reading breakfast?
Allow around 2 cups of coffee or tea per person during the first hour, with extra hot water for refills. Have at least one mug per participant and enough drinking glasses for water or cold drinks.
When should I prepare allergen labels?
Create the allergen cards after checking the final dietary list and finish them at least one day before the event. Put a label next to every dish before the buffet opens.
How early should I shop for a reading breakfast?
Buy non-perishable items, tableware and decorations several days in advance. Shop for refrigerated products no earlier than 1–2 days before the breakfast, then check their condition again on the event morning.
