Rally race shopping list

A rally race needs more than cars, drivers and a route. You need clear route markers, reliable timing, visible start and finish equipment, and enough communication and safety gear for every checkpoint. This shopping list covers the practical items that are easy to underestimate, including spare batteries, cable protection, towing equipment and participant materials. Use the number of crews, marshals and route stations to adjust quantities before you buy or collect anything.

Tips

  • Plan at least one walkie-talkie for the start, finish, timekeepers and each marshal post, then add 2–3 spare units. Charge every radio the day before and pack spare batteries separately.
  • Buy or prepare two route markers for every junction where a driver could hesitate, plus extra arrows for replacements. Pack them by route section so marshals can place and remove them quickly.
  • Allow one bib number, route book and participant pack per crew, with at least 10% extra for late changes or damaged materials. Keep the start list and spare numbers at registration.
  • Use one stopwatch or timing device per timing point, plus one backup. Bring a charged laptop and printer for registration and results, and pack extension cords, power strips and cable bridges before setup day.
  • Prepare one first aid kit at the start, one at the finish and one mobile kit for the route. Keep towing cables, traffic cones and crowd barriers with the rescue team rather than at the registration table.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a rally race?
You need route arrows and rally signs, start and finish flags, bib numbers, route books, timing devices, radios, cones, barriers, first aid kits and towing cables. Add tables, chairs, power equipment and waste bins for the start-finish area.
How many route arrows do I need for a rally race?
Count every junction and decision point, then prepare at least two arrows per point, plus 10–20% spare signs. A short route with 40 decision points therefore needs about 88–96 arrows.
How many walkie-talkies are needed for a rally race?
Provide one radio for the start, finish, timing team and each marshal post. For example, 8 marshal posts plus start, finish and timing require 11 radios; add 2–3 spares.
How many participant packs should I prepare?
Prepare one pack per registered crew and add at least 10% spare packs. Each pack can include the bib number, route book and any event information, so a field of 50 crews requires 55 packs.
