What to buy for a park walk

A park walk needs more than snacks and bottled water. You’ll need supplies for registration, route marking, rest stops and a simple picnic setup, plus equipment for changing weather and minor injuries. Plan drinks for the walking time as well as the break, and pack route materials where staff can reach them quickly. This shopping list covers the practical items that are easy to overlook when the start and finish are in different parts of the park.

Tips

  • Pack at least one route arrow or sign for every turn, junction and entrance where walkers could lose the trail. Add a few spare arrows in case one is moved or damaged.
  • For a two-hour walk, allow roughly 500–750 ml of water per person, then add extra for warm weather. Bring coolers, ice packs and water jugs so drinks can be refilled at rest points.
  • Prepare one route pack for each guide or rest-point volunteer. Include a route map, clipboard, whistle and a clear way to identify the assigned section.
  • Do not leave shelter and lighting until the day itself. Party tents protect the registration and catering tables, while LED lamps or string lights help if setup or pack-down runs into low light.
  • Buy or bring serving equipment separately from the food: reusable cups, plates, cutlery, serving platters, tongs, cutting boards and knives. A first aid kit should be at registration and another with the lead guide if the route is spread out.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a park walk?
Allow about 500–750 ml per person for a two-hour walk, with extra on warm days or routes without drinking fountains. Keep additional water at the rest stop for refills.
What food should I buy for a park walk?
Choose snacks that can be served without cooking, such as sandwiches, fruit and individually portioned items. Plan at least one snack portion per person, plus around 10% extra for late registrations or larger appetites.
How many route signs do I need for a park walk?
Count every turn, junction, entrance and confusing section on the route, then add 10–15% spare arrows. Check the route shortly before the walk because temporary works or moved signs can change where markings are needed.
What should I bring for park walk registration?
Set up one registration table with clipboards, participant details, bib numbers and pens, and keep the route maps nearby. Have the table ready at least 30 minutes before the advertised start so arrivals do not delay the welcome briefing.
