What to buy for a night drive

A night drive needs more than bikes and a route. You need visible route markers, reliable lighting, roadside safety equipment and a simple setup for registration and refreshments. This shopping list covers the practical items to have ready before participants arrive, from reflective vests and walkie-talkies to spare inner tubes and coolers. Check quantities against your participant limit, then shop at least two to three days before the drive so missing equipment can still be replaced.

Tips

  • Plan one reflective vest for every traffic marshal and add at least two spare vests for unexpected helpers or replacements. Visibility matters most at the start, finish and marked risk points.
  • Bring one flashlight per marshal or route-checking person, plus LED work lights for the start area. Pack extension cords and power strips only after checking where safe power is available.
  • For a group of up to 20 cyclists, take at least two spare inner tubes, two tire levers, one pump and one bike repair kit. Increase the spare-tube supply when the route is long or participants use different wheel sizes.
  • Prepare route maps, bib numbers and directional signs before shopping day so you know the required quantities. Print one route map per participant and keep several extra copies for marshals and last-minute registrations.
  • Fill coolers and thermos flasks on the day of the drive, not the night before. Reusable cups should cover every participant plus at least 10% extra, because cups are often misplaced during a moving event.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a night drive?
At minimum, prepare lighting, reflective vests, traffic cones, barrier tape, first aid kits, flashlights and communication equipment. Add route signs, maps, bike repair supplies and coolers based on your participant limit.
How many spare bike parts should I buy for a night drive?
For up to 20 cyclists, start with two spare inner tubes, two tire levers, one pump and one repair kit. For larger groups, add one spare inner tube for every additional 10 riders and check wheel-size compatibility.
How many reusable cups do I need per participant?
Plan one cup per participant and add 10% extra. For 30 people, prepare at least 33 reusable cups so replacements are available during the drive.
When should I buy supplies for a night drive?
Do the main shopping two to three days before the event. Check material stock again the day before, and prepare drinks, coolers and thermos flasks on the event day.
