What to bring for mountain bike training

This shopping list covers the supplies needed for a mountain bike training session, from route marking and registration to refreshments and basic repairs. Plan equipment for the number of riders attending, then add a small buffer for forgotten gear, punctures and changing weather. Drinks, snacks, spare inner tubes and first-aid supplies are easy to overlook until the group is already on the trail. Check batteries, pumps and lights before shopping so you do not buy duplicates or discover flat equipment on the day.

Tips

  • Plan at least one drink bottle per rider, plus extra water at the start or repair point. For a session lasting more than an hour, allow roughly 500–750 ml per person per hour, depending on weather and effort.
  • Bring one spare inner tube for every 5–10 bikes, along with tire levers, multi-tools, pumps and a bike repair kit. A puncture can otherwise stop an entire training group while someone waits for help.
  • Use enough route arrows, cones and barrier tape to make every turn and hazard clear. Pack extra markersβ€”around 10% more than your route plan requiresβ€”because signs can move or be missed on wooded trails.
  • Prepare one first-aid kit and emergency blankets at the repair point, and keep reflective vests available for organisers or route marshals. Check the forecast on the morning of training and add lights or rain protection when visibility may change.
  • Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour if coffee, tea or other refreshments are served after the ride, then add snacks and a bread meal for the planned group size. Reusable cups and plates should be counted before shopping, not during setup.

Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to mountain bike training?
Bring a roadworthy mountain bike, helmet, water bottle and suitable clothing. The organiser should also have spare helmets and protective pads, pumps, repair tools, route markers, first-aid supplies and refreshments for the group.
How much water do I need for mountain bike training?
Pack about 500–750 ml per rider per hour, with extra water at the start or repair point. In hot weather or on a demanding route, plan closer to 750 ml per hour and bring additional supplies for delays.
How many spare inner tubes do I need for a bike training session?
Take at least one spare inner tube for every 5–10 bikes, plus tire levers and pumps. For a large group or a remote route, carry extra tubes so one puncture does not exhaust the repair supplies.
What safety equipment is needed for mountain bike training?
Have one first-aid kit, emergency blankets, route arrows, barrier tape and reflective vests for the organisers. Keep spare helmets and protective pads available, and check batteries and lights before the session starts.
