What to buy for a mile run
A mile run needs more than race numbers and finishersβ medals. Youβll need supplies for registration, route marking, timing, water, traffic control, first aid and volunteer coordination. Buy or collect the items early enough to check quantities, test the timing system and chill drinks before race day. Use the planβs shopping and equipment lists as your master checklist, then adjust quantities to your registered participant count and route layout.

Tips
- Order bib numbers, bib straps and medals as soon as registration closes, with a small reserve for late changes or damaged items. Keep the final participant list next to the sorted bibs so registration volunteers can find runners quickly.
- Plan water by participant count and course length rather than buying a generic amount. Put water crates where runners can reach them at the finish, and chill the drinks before volunteers arrive.
- Prepare one clearly labelled kit for each traffic post. Include a safety vest, walkie-talkie or mobile phone, and any route or barrier supplies needed at that position.
- Test the time registration system, laptops, tablets, microphones and sound system at least one day before the run. Charge power banks and bring extension cords and power strips so a missing outlet does not delay registration or timing.
- Do not leave safety supplies until the morning of the event. Check first aid kits, traffic barriers, cones, barrier tape and flashlights before loading them, and keep blankets available for runners who feel cold after finishing.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need to buy for a mile run?
- Plan for race bibs and straps, finisher medals, route arrows, kilometre markers, water crates, timing equipment, registration equipment and safety supplies. The exact number depends on your participant list, traffic posts and course layout.
- How much water do I need for a mile run?
- For a short mile run, provide water at the finish and calculate the total from your expected finishers rather than the start list alone. As a practical starting point, allow two 500 ml servings per participant, then add a 10β20% reserve for volunteers and late demand.
- When should I order medals and race numbers?
- Order them immediately after registration closes, or at least 2β3 weeks before race day if your supplier needs production time. Keep a small reserve for damaged or missing numbers and last-minute participant changes.
- What safety equipment is needed for a mile run?
- Prepare first aid kits, safety vests, traffic barriers, traffic cones and barrier tape for the course team. Add flashlights if any setup, teardown or traffic duty takes place in low light, and check everything at least one day before the event.
