What to buy for an ice skating competition
A skating competition needs more than race numbers and medals. Youβll need equipment for timing and announcements, tables for registration and the jury, serving supplies, payment equipment and clear course markings. Buy or pack items according to your participant count, volunteer team and catering plan. Check power access at the rink before shopping, and keep printed forms, spare bib numbers and extension cords together so they arrive at the venue.

Tips
- Prepare one bib number per participant, plus at least 10% spares for late changes, damaged numbers or forgotten items. Sort them by starting group before the competition day.
- Plan one reusable cup per guest if you have a washing point; otherwise allow two cups per person for a short event. Bring extra water jugs so the catering table can be refilled without interrupting registration.
- Use at least two stopwatches for each timing point so a backup is available if one fails. Pack spare batteries and test every stopwatch before the first start.
- Count one chair for every registration, jury and key volunteer position, then add 10% spare seating. Put registration tables near the entrance and keep clothes racks away from the rink traffic flow.
- Check the rinkβs power points at least 7 days before the event. Pack extension cords and power strips for the PA system, printer, laptop, kettles and payment terminal, and keep cables away from wet areas.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for an ice skating competition?
- At minimum, prepare bib numbers, cones, course markings, stopwatches, a PA system, a laptop and printed competition forms. Add one backup stopwatch and at least 10% spare bib numbers for every participant group.
- How many cups and plates do I need for a skating competition?
- For a single catering service, allow one plate and one cutlery set per guest, plus 10% extra. Plan one reusable cup per guest if cups can be washed during the event, or two per person if they cannot.
- How many tables are needed for an ice skating competition?
- Reserve at least one registration table, one jury table and one catering table. Add a separate table for prizes or payments if those activities would otherwise block registration, and confirm the rinkβs available space at least 7 days ahead.
- How early should I buy supplies for an ice skating competition?
- Order prizes, medals, bib numbers and any printed materials at least 14 days before the event. Buy fresh catering supplies 1β2 days beforehand, then check all equipment and pack the transport boxes the day before.
