How to organise a soup competition
A soup competition works best when the rules, judging criteria and serving setup are decided before invitations go out. Set a firm registration deadline, collect dietary information and give cooks clear instructions on portions, arrival times and equipment. On the day, keep each soup identified by a competition number so judging stays impartial. Allow time for warming stations, jury forms, drinks and cleanup—not just the tasting itself.

Tips
- Set the judging criteria before registering participants. Use a short score sheet covering areas such as flavour, texture and presentation, and print one form for each judge and entry.
- Close registrations at least 7 days before the event. This gives you time to process dietary requirements, print the participant list and assign competition numbers.
- Plan the room around the soup stations first. Leave enough space for queues, keep the jury table separate, and check that induction hobs, extension cords and power strips do not overload one socket.
- Ask cooks to arrive 60–90 minutes before tasting starts if soups need reheating. Label every station with a number rather than a name to prevent accidental bias during judging.
- Count bowls, soup spoons, serving ladles and drinks glasses for every participant, judge and guest, then add at least 10% spare. Missing serving ware is harder to replace once the competition has started.
Frequently asked questions
- How many soups do you need for a soup competition?
- Six to twelve entries usually gives guests enough variety without making judging too long. If you expect more than 12 soups, use tasting portions and set a firm judging schedule.
- How far in advance should you invite people to a soup competition?
- Send invitations 3–4 weeks before the event and close registrations 7 days beforehand. That leaves enough time to confirm judges, collect dietary requirements and prepare participant instructions.
- How long does a soup competition take?
- Allow around 3 hours for the event itself: 60–90 minutes for setup and reheating, 60 minutes for tasting and judging, and 30 minutes for results and clearing away. Add extra time if more than 12 soups are entered.
- How do you keep soup warm at a competition?
- Use warm-holding pans or induction hobs and check temperatures with digital thermometers every 30 minutes. Start reheating 60–90 minutes before tasting, and keep hot soup at a safe serving temperature throughout.
