How to organise a canoe slalom competition

Start with the course, safety requirements and competition permit before opening registration. A canoe slalom event depends on more than gates and boats: you also need the water manager informed, rescue cover booked, officials confirmed and reliable power for timing and announcements. Work backwards from race day so start lists, volunteer shifts, catering and venue access are ready before the first paddler arrives. The final inspection should cover both the course and the public areas, including parking, toilets and shelter.

Tips

  • Secure the venue, permit and water manager approval first, ideally at least 8–12 weeks before race day. You cannot finalise the safety plan or publish registration until the water access and operating conditions are confirmed.
  • Set the safety plan before ordering event services. Define rescue positions, life boat access, rescue lines, life jackets and spare canoes, then book lifeguards early enough to cover every scheduled racing hour.
  • Close registration 7–10 days before the competition. Use the final entries to prepare start lists, sort competition numbers, collect dietary requirements and assign volunteers to registration, course support and catering.
  • Check the course and equipment on site the day before. Test the slalom gates, hanging kits, starting blocks, buoys, sound system, wireless microphones and all extension cords rather than discovering a missing part during the briefing.
  • Build the race-day timetable around fixed moments: officials’ briefing about 60 minutes before the first start, competitor check-in 45–60 minutes beforehand and a short buffer between heats for gate or safety adjustments. Keep a megaphone available if power or the sound system fails.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should you organise a canoe slalom competition?
Allow at least 8–12 weeks for the venue, competition permit, water manager, safety services and officials. Close registration 7–10 days before race day so start lists and volunteer shifts can be completed.
How many lifeguards do you need for a canoe slalom competition?
The number depends on the course risk assessment and local requirements, so confirm it with the water manager and safety service. Book coverage for the full operating period, including practice, racing and the final clear-up, not only the heats.
When should you prepare the start list for a canoe slalom event?
Prepare a draft as soon as registration closes, usually 7–10 days before the event. Issue the final start list after checking entries, competition numbers, categories and any late changes, preferably no later than the officials’ briefing.
What equipment is easy to forget for a canoe slalom competition?
Organisers often remember the canoes and gates but miss spare paddles, power banks, extension cords, printer supplies, rescue lines and transport carts. Make a separate check 24 hours before the event and keep spares accessible at the start and finish areas.
