What to buy for a heath walk

A heath walk needs more than water and a marked route. You will need supplies for registration, navigation, rest stops and the finish area, plus practical equipment for serving hot drinks and keeping food chilled. Plan quantities around your expected number of walkers, then add a small buffer for volunteers and replacements. The items below cover the parts people most often arrange too late: route signage, wristbands, maps, coolers, shelter and enough cups for the finish.

Tips

  • Prepare one route pack for each marked section, including arrows, barrier tape, maps and spare pens. Pack these at least one day before the walk so volunteers are not sorting supplies at the start.
  • Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then add extra water for volunteers and anyone delayed on the route. Chill drinks before loading the coolers rather than relying on ice at the last minute.
  • For a hot-food finish, provide one bowl, spoon and cup per participant, plus around 10% extra. Soup kettles, serving spoons, cutting boards and knives should be checked before the shopping trip.
  • Bring one wristband and bib number for every registered walker, with at least 5% spare for damaged or missing items. Keep the participant list, pens and clipboards together at the registration table.
  • Count tables, chairs and shelter space for both the start and finish areas. Arrange extension cords, coffee equipment, lanterns and waste bins at least 24 hours before setup, especially if the walk finishes after daylight fades.

Frequently asked questions

How much water and food do I need for a heath walk?
Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, including water and other chilled drinks. For snacks and fruit, buy at least one serving per walker and add 10% for volunteers, seconds and damaged items.
How many route maps and wristbands should I buy?
Prepare one route map and one wristband for every registered participant, then add 5% spare. If 100 people are registered, prepare at least 105 of each, plus extra maps for route volunteers.
What equipment is needed for a heath walk finish area?
Allow one seat and roughly one place setting per person if food is served at the finish, with 10% extra cups, plates, bowls and cutlery. You will also need tables, shelter, coolers, hot-drink equipment, serving utensils and waste bins.
When should I prepare the shopping and route materials?
Buy non-perishable supplies at least 3 to 5 days before the walk. Chill drinks, pack route materials and check the equipment the day before; do the final weather-dependent shopping within 24 hours.
