Glassblowing Workshop Checklist

A glassblowing workshop needs more than a furnace and a booking list. You need to coordinate the instructor, venue, participant information, glass stock, hot-work equipment, protective gear, and cooling time in the right order. This checklist covers the work from reserving the space through setting up workstations and cleaning afterward. Use it to see what must be confirmed early, what can wait until the final week, and what should be checked before anyone approaches the furnace.

Tips

  • Book the instructor and venue before opening registration. Confirm the furnace, warming oven, gas supply, ventilation, work surfaces, and the maximum number of participants the room can safely handle.
  • Send participant information before the workshop, including clothing guidance, closed-toe shoe requirements, arrival time, expected heat exposure, and any age or mobility limits. Collect dietary requirements at registration rather than chasing them later.
  • Order glass stock and colored glass chips early enough to check the delivery before setup day. Count materials against the number of registered participants and keep a small reserve for breakage and practice pieces.
  • Treat safety preparation as a separate workstream: check fire safety, install barriers, prepare goggles, gloves, leather aprons, and face shields, and make sure gas cylinders, regulators, and hoses are compatible and secure.
  • Set up and label each workstation before participants arrive. Preheat the warming oven only when the instructor confirms the timing, and keep the participant list, project labels, and workshop materials together at reception.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a glassblowing workshop venue?
Book the venue and glass instructor at least 6–8 weeks before the workshop. This gives you time to confirm furnace access, gas arrangements, ventilation, safety barriers, tables, and the final participant capacity before invitations go out.
How many people can attend a glassblowing workshop?
Use the instructor’s safe workstation limit rather than the room’s seating capacity. Confirm the exact number before registration opens, because participants need supervised access to hot equipment and enough space for protective gear and movement.
What should participants wear to a glassblowing workshop?
Tell participants at least 7 days in advance to wear natural-fibre clothing, long trousers, and closed-toe shoes. Include instructions about tying back long hair and avoiding loose sleeves, jewellery, or synthetic fabrics near heat.
When should I prepare the glassblowing equipment and safety gear?
Sort tools, glass, protective equipment, and workstation materials on the day before the workshop. Complete the fire-safety and gas-equipment check before participants arrive, then have the instructor approve the furnace and burner setup before work begins.
