Fresh market shopping list: what to buy and bring

A fresh market needs more than produce and stall tables. You also need a reliable way to display prices, take payments, guide visitors and keep drinks and supplies organised. This shopping list covers the practical equipment and consumables behind the market setup, from cash boxes and scales to cable reels, coolers and serving bowls. Check quantities against the number of stalls, suppliers and visitors before shopping, then leave time to collect borrowed or rented items.

Tips

  • Plan one price-tag set and one booth number for every stall, plus a small reserve of blank tags and labels for late changes. Put signage supplies together before suppliers arrive.
  • Allow at least one cash box and one card machine for each active payment point. Keep a separate cash float and test every machine before market day.
  • Use one table covering and a clear sign for each stall, then add spare tablecloths, pens and clipboards for registration or supplier changes.
  • Count power equipment by location, not just in total: check each coffee machine, kettle or payment point against available outlets, extension cords, power strips and cable reels.
  • Prepare refreshments before opening. Set aside coolers for items that must stay cold, and match drink dispensers, thermos flasks, trays and small bowls to the expected visitor flow.

Frequently asked questions

What should I buy for a fresh market with 10 stalls?
For 10 stalls, plan 10 booth numbers, 10 sets of price tags and enough tables and tablecloths for each layout. Add at least 2 cash points, 2 clipboards, several pens and spare labels for changes on the day.
How many tables do I need for a fresh market?
Start with the number of stalls and count the tables shown in your booth layout; many stalls need 1 or 2 tables each. Add 10% spare table capacity if the layout or supplier quantities may change.
How many coolers are needed for a fresh market?
Use at least 1 cooler for each cold-storage point, rather than one shared cooler for the whole market. For a market with 10 stalls, plan 2 to 3 coolers if drinks or chilled products are handled in separate areas.
When should I buy supplies for a fresh market?
Buy non-perishable equipment and signage supplies at least 1 week before the market. Collect rented or borrowed furniture, power equipment and coolers 1 to 2 days beforehand so missing items can still be replaced.
