What to Bring for a Freedom Walk
A Freedom Walk needs more than refreshments and a printed route. You will also need clear markers, registration supplies, weather protection and equipment for the memorial moment. Plan for the full route, including rest stops and the finish area, rather than buying only for the start. This list helps you estimate quantities, prepare volunteers and avoid last-minute purchases such as spare power, extra signage and rain cover.

Tips
- Plan two to three drinks per participant for the first hour, then add roughly one drink per person for every additional hour. Keep extra water at each rest stop and at the finish.
- Prepare one wristband and one printed route map per registered participant, plus at least 10% extra for late registrations, replacements and volunteer use.
- Place route arrows and information boards at every turn, crossing and confusing section. Keep spare markers, cones and tape with the route team so missing signs can be replaced during the walk.
- Allow one reflective vest for every traffic marshal and route volunteer working near roads. Pack spare vests, power banks and umbrellas in the event kit instead of leaving them at the registration table.
- Set up refreshments in the finish area at least 60 minutes before the expected first arrival. Bring separate coffee cups, reusable cups, plates and cutlery, and label food clearly when dietary requirements have been collected.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a Freedom Walk?
- Plan two to three drinks per participant for the first hour, followed by about one drink per person per additional hour. Add extra supplies for warm weather and keep water at every planned rest stop.
- How many route arrows should I buy for a Freedom Walk?
- Use at least one arrow for every turn, crossing and unclear section, then add 10% spare markers. For a route with 40 marked points, prepare about 44 arrows and keep replacements with the route team.
- What should I buy for Freedom Walk registration?
- Prepare one wristband, one route map and one registration entry per participant, plus 10% extra. Also bring clipboards, pens and a separate printed volunteer list so registration does not depend on one device.
- When should I prepare the Freedom Walk supplies?
- Complete the main shopping and collect borrowed equipment at least 3 days before the walk. Check the weather forecast 24 hours before departure and add umbrellas, warm layers or extra shelter if needed.
