What to bring for a film camp

A film camp needs more than cameras and a projector. Each group needs a working camera setup, stable power, clear audio and a way to move footage to a laptop. You also need enough tableware, serving equipment and cold storage for the catering, plus a simple screening setup for the finished films. Use this list to check equipment before the day and buy or borrow anything missing at least a few days ahead.

Tips

  • Plan one complete camera kit per participant group: a compact camera or smartphone clamp, tripod, microphone, headphones and a memory card. Add one spare memory card for every two groups so filming does not stop when storage fills up.
  • Give each laptop its own charger and connect the laptops to power strips before the assignments begin. Bring at least one USB card reader for every two laptops to avoid a queue when groups transfer footage.
  • Test the projector, screen, HDMI cables and portable speaker together before participants arrive. Keep a spare HDMI cable available; a missing or faulty cable is easy to overlook and can delay the final screening.
  • Set out plates, drinking glasses, mugs and cutlery for the full attendance before catering starts, then add roughly 10 percent extra. Use coolers for items that must stay cold and serving platters and spoons for shared food.
  • Charge cameras, power banks and other rechargeable equipment the evening before, and clear every memory card after copying any required files. Label group equipment so a missing tripod, microphone or charger can be traced quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment does each film camp group need?
Give each group a camera or phone setup, tripod, microphone, headphones and memory card. Each group also needs access to a laptop, charger and a card reader for transferring footage; prepare one complete kit per group.
How many memory cards do I need for a film camp?
Start with one memory card per camera and keep one spare card for every two groups. Clear and test all cards before the camp, then bring a card reader so footage can be copied during the day.
How much tableware should I buy for a film camp?
Prepare one plate, drinking glass, mug and cutlery set per attendee, plus about 10 percent extra. For 30 people, that means at least 33 of each item used by everyone, unless mugs or glasses are being reused.
When should I test the film camp equipment?
Test cameras, microphones, laptops, chargers, memory cards and the projector at least one day before the camp. Charge batteries and power banks the night before, and check the complete HDMI and speaker setup before guests arrive.
