What to bring for an estate walk

An estate walk needs more than route maps and comfortable walking shoes. You will need supplies for registration, refreshments, route marking, communication and basic safety. Plan what must be carried along the route, what stays at the reception desk and what needs to be kept chilled. This shopping list covers the practical equipment for welcoming participants, guiding the walk and closing down afterwards.

Tips

  • Prepare one set of printed route maps for each participant, plus at least 10 extra copies for late registrations or damaged pages. Pack directional signs and marker ribbons separately so they can be placed quickly along the route.
  • For the reception desk, take name labels, clipboards and ballpoint pens, and print the participant list no later than the day before. Bring at least 10 spare labels for walk-ins or replacements.
  • Keep chilled catering in coolers until serving time. Count reusable mugs, drinking cups, plates and cutlery against the confirmed participant list, then add around 10% extra so a dropped or misplaced item does not stop service.
  • Charge phones, walkie-talkies and power banks the evening before. If the walk may finish near dusk, pack LED lanterns and spare batteries rather than relying on phone lights.
  • Put the first aid kit, whistles, safety vests and a compass with the lead guide, not in the reception supplies. Check the route and alternative route before the event so signs and safety equipment match the final plan.

Frequently asked questions

How many route maps do I need for an estate walk?
Print one map per registered participant, plus at least 10 extra copies. Keep the spare maps at the reception desk for late registrations, replacements or volunteers.
How much tableware should I buy for an estate walk?
Count one mug, drinking cup, plate and cutlery set per person, then add about 10% extra. For 40 participants, that means 44 of each item where practical.
When should I prepare the estate walk supplies?
Buy non-perishable supplies at least 3 to 5 days before the walk. Print the participant list and route materials the day before, and chill the catering on the event day.
What safety equipment do I need for an estate walk?
Take a first aid kit, safety vests, whistles and a compass, and keep communication devices charged. Pack LED lanterns and spare batteries if any part of the walk could run after daylight.
