What to Buy for a Diabetes Bike Ride
A diabetes bike ride needs more than bikes and refreshments. You will need supplies for hydration, route marking, rider safety, basic repairs, volunteer coordination and a clearly supported rest stop. Use this list alongside your route and registration details so you can buy the right quantities before the event. Plan for spares: pumps, inner tubes, power banks and communication equipment are easy to overlook and difficult to replace once riders are on the course.

Tips
- Plan water capacity for every rider and volunteer at each rest stop, then add at least 10% extra for hot weather or delays. Hydration backpacks and coolers help distribute supplies along the route.
- Buy route arrows, barrier tape and traffic cones in advance of marking the course. Count signs by junction and turn rather than by kilometre, and keep a spare bundle for replacements.
- Prepare a repair kit for every active support point, including a pump, tire levers, inner tubes, spare chains and bike keys. Test the pumps and check that the tubes match the bicycles used on the ride.
- Provide one reflective vest for every traffic marshal and route volunteer, plus a few extras for late replacements. Keep helmets available for anyone using a spare bicycle or needing a replacement.
- Charge walkie-talkies, speakers, microphones and power banks the day before, and pack the correct charging cables with them. Extension cords and power strips are easy to forget when equipment is collected from different places.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a diabetes bike ride?
- Plan at least 500β750 ml per rider for each hour on the route, with extra water at rest stops. Add 10% to the total for volunteers, warm weather and delays.
- How many spare inner tubes should I buy?
- Buy at least one spare inner tube for every 10 riders, with a minimum of four for a small group. Match the tube sizes to the bicycles and keep additional tubes with the repair volunteers.
- How many reflective vests are needed for the ride?
- Provide one vest for every person working at traffic posts, rest stops or route support. Add 10% extra, or at least two spare vests, for volunteers who change roles or arrive without suitable visibility gear.
- When should I prepare the bike ride equipment?
- Check and test the equipment at least 48 hours before the ride. Charge communication devices and power banks the day before, while route signs, repair kits and rest-stop supplies should be packed before the event morning.
