What you need for a comic drawing workshop

A comic drawing workshop needs more than paper and pencils. Plan one complete drawing set per participant, plus spare materials for mistakes, demonstrations and late registrations. You will also need presentation equipment, tables with enough working space, name badges and a simple coffee and tea station. Use the participant count to calculate quantities, then shop at least two or three days before the workshop so missing supplies can still be replaced.

Tips

  • Prepare one drawing place per participant and add 10–15% extra paper, pencils and erasers. This covers late arrivals, damaged sheets and exercises that require a second attempt.
  • Give each participant a sketchbook or a stack of drawing paper, two graphite pencils, one eraser and access to a sharpener. Put shared colored pencils, fineliners and markers in containers on each table rather than handing them out individually.
  • Check the teaching setup at least one day beforehand: test the laptop, projector, screen, presentation remote and power connections together. Bring enough extension cords and power strips to reach every table without creating trip hazards.
  • Set aside one table for registration and one for refreshments. Prepare one cup and glass per participant, plus 10% extra, and make sure the coffee maker can serve the group during the planned break.
  • Buy or gather the small items that are easy to overlook: rulers, tracing templates, kneadable erasers, clipboards, painter’s tape and poster putty. These are often needed during exercises but are less likely to be available at the venue.

Frequently asked questions

How much drawing paper do I need for a comic drawing workshop?
Plan at least 5–10 sheets per participant for a short workshop, depending on the number of exercises. Add 10–15% extra so participants can restart pages and you have paper for demonstrations.
How many pencils should I buy per participant?
Provide two graphite pencils per participant, one eraser and shared sharpeners. Keep 10% spare pencils and erasers available for breakage, loss or late registrations.
What refreshments do I need for a comic drawing workshop?
For a workshop of up to three hours, plan coffee, tea and water for the full group, with one cup and glass per participant plus 10% extra. Set up the coffee and tea station before registration begins, not during the first exercise.
When should I buy the supplies for the workshop?
Do the main shopping two or three days before the workshop and check the complete list immediately afterward. Prepare and sort the materials the day before, leaving only fresh refreshments and final setup for the event day.
