What you need for a children’s cooking workshop
A children’s cooking workshop needs more than ingredients. Plan one workstation per small group, with child-safe tools, recipe cards, name stickers and enough tableware for tasting and serving. Buy or gather chilled ingredients shortly before the session, then portion dry ingredients and prepare fruit and vegetables in advance. This checklist also covers the items that are easy to overlook, such as hand soap, oven mitts, timers and washing-up tubs.

Tips
- Plan one complete workstation for every four to six children, including a mixing bowl, cutting board, child-safe knives, measuring tools and a rolling pin. This prevents children from waiting for the same equipment.
- Buy ingredients only after the final participant list and dietary requirements are confirmed. Keep chilled products refrigerated and separate allergy-safe ingredients before the workshop starts.
- Allow at least one recipe card and one name sticker per child, plus a few spares. Print the cards before setup so registration and cooking do not compete for your attention.
- Have one oven mitt per adult supervising the ovens and at least one kitchen timer for each active baking task. Preheat the ovens before participants arrive, not during the introduction.
- Set out hand soap, microfiber cloths, washing-up tubs and waste bins before opening the kitchen. Children will need regular handwashing and quick cleanup between preparation and tasting.
Frequently asked questions
- How many children should share one cooking workstation?
- Plan for four to six children per workstation, depending on the recipe and the amount of adult supervision. Give each group its own mixing bowl, cutting board and measuring tools where possible.
- How much tableware do I need for a children’s cooking workshop?
- Provide one reusable plate, drinking glass and children’s cutlery set per child, plus at least 10% extra for replacements. Add serving spoons and enough bowls for each dish or ingredient station.
- When should I buy ingredients for a children’s cooking workshop?
- Buy fresh and chilled ingredients one day before the workshop when possible, then keep chilled products refrigerated until setup. Portion dry ingredients and wash or cut produce shortly before the session.
- What safety supplies are needed for a children’s cooking workshop?
- Prepare child-safe knives, oven mitts, kitchen timers, hand soap and clearly marked workstations before children arrive. Check allergies and dietary requirements in advance, and share them with the kitchen before shopping and preparation.
