Carp Competition Checklist
A carp competition needs more than fishing gear and a list of entrants. Before the first cast, the water, rules, permit, registration and swim layout must be settled. On the day, competitors need clear directions, safe fish handling and a reliable weigh-in station. This checklist puts the work in a practical order, from reserving the fishing water and confirming participants to setting up tents, registration tables and refreshments.

Tips
- Set the rules before inviting participants, including the scoring method, fishing times, permitted bait and fish-care requirements. Send the final version with the confirmation so nobody arrives expecting different conditions.
- Close registrations early enough to print the participant list and prepare competition cards. A deadline of 7 days before the event gives you time to chase missing dietary requirements and contact details.
- Test the scales, weighing stands and weighing bags before competitors arrive. Calibrate the weighing equipment on the morning of the competition and keep a second recording method for every catch.
- Walk the route to the swims before setup and mark it clearly with spot markers or marker buoys. Check that paths, water edges, electrical leads and the weigh-in area are safe in daylight and after dark.
- Prepare food, chilled drinks, coffee and water before registration opens. Keep refreshments in coolers and use thermos flasks or dispensers so volunteers are not leaving the competition area during the first hour.
Frequently asked questions
- How far in advance should I organise a carp competition?
- Reserve the fishing water and check the competition permit at least 8 to 12 weeks ahead. Set the rules and open registration once the venue and date are confirmed, then close entries about 7 days before the event.
- What equipment is needed for a carp competition weigh-in?
- Prepare tested fish scales, weighing stands, weighing bags, measuring tapes and catch-registration forms. Set up the weigh-in station at least 60 minutes before the first scheduled weigh-in and calibrate the scales on the day.
- How many participants can one organiser manage?
- Plan one registration volunteer for roughly 20 to 30 participants, plus a separate person for weighing and recording catches. Add walkie-talkies when swims are spread out or the competition has more than 30 entrants.
- When should I set up the fishing swims and event tents?
- Place swim markers and build the party tents after the venue safety check, usually 2 to 3 hours before registration. Allow another 30 minutes to arrange tables, chairs, waste bins and the route signs.
