What to Bring for a Camping Week
A camping week needs more than tents and sleeping bags. For a group stay, plan the food, cooking equipment, drinking water, cooling space and shared furniture before you leave. This checklist includes group tents, sleeping tents, mats, gas burners, cooking pots, coolers and the smaller items that are easy to overlook. Check dietary requirements before shopping, and keep fresh food cold from the moment you buy it until it is used.

Tips
- Plan meals for every day plus at least one spare meal. Buy drinking water for the full group and set aside extra water for cooking, hot drinks and unexpected delays.
- Count sleeping equipment by person: one sleeping mat, sleeping bag and pillow per camper. Add blankets for cold nights, even if the forecast looks mild.
- Check gas burners, cylinders, cooking pots, frying pans and serving utensils before shopping. A large group can quickly outgrow one small pan or a single cooking point.
- Pack coolers and ice packs before buying fresh produce. Keep meat, dairy and other chilled food cold during transport and refill the ice as soon as it melts.
- Bring the small setup items people tend to miss: tent hammers, herring, guy ropes, ground tarps and labels for tent parts. Pack handcarts if supplies must be moved from parking to the campsite.
Frequently asked questions
- How much drinking water do I need for a camping week?
- Plan at least 2 to 3 litres per person per day for drinking, then add water for cooking, hot drinks and washing. For a seven-day stay, that is 14 to 21 litres per person before the extra cooking allowance.
- How many sleeping mats and sleeping bags do I need for camping?
- Buy or pack one sleeping mat and one sleeping bag per person, plus one pillow per person. Add blankets for each sleeping area if nights may be cold or campers have different comfort needs.
- How many coolers and ice packs are needed for a group camping trip?
- Use enough cooler space to keep fresh food separate from drinks, and plan to replenish ice packs at least once every 24 hours in warm weather. Check the meal plan and group size before deciding whether one cooler is enough.
- When should I buy food for a camping week?
- Buy non-perishable food several days before departure so it can be sorted and packed calmly. Buy fresh produce as close to departure as practical, then place it in cleaned coolers with ice packs before loading.
