What you need for a bike parade

A bike parade needs more than bicycles and refreshments. Plan supplies for registration, route support, the start and finish area, and basic repairs on the road. Water, cups and serving equipment are easy to underestimate when riders arrive together, while pumps, spare inner tubes and repair kits are often forgotten until the first breakdown. Use this shopping list alongside your route plan, volunteer assignments and weather check so everything is ready before participants arrive.

Tips

  • Plan at least one water station at the start or finish, with extra jugs or dispensers if riders will be away for more than 60 minutes. Bring reusable cups and napkins, and keep a separate supply for volunteers.
  • Pack one bike pump and one repair kit for every mobile support team, plus spare inner tubes in common wheel sizes. Check the equipment before the parade rather than discovering a flat tyre at the start.
  • Allow one walkie-talkie for each key route position, including the lead rider, rear rider and traffic posts. Charge all units and pack power banks the day before.
  • Set up registration, announcements and refreshments separately so queues do not block bicycles. Tables, chairs, bicycle racks and barriers should be ready before the first group arrives.
  • If you are serving coffee or tea, prepare enough thermos flasks and cups for the volunteer team as well as participants. Keep coolers and insulated crates ready for drinks that must stay cold during setup and the ride.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a bike parade?
Plan roughly 500 to 750 ml per rider for a parade lasting up to two hours, with more available in warm weather. Add a separate allowance for volunteers and route staff, and place extra water at the finish.
What bike repair supplies should I bring to a bike parade?
Bring at least one pump, one repair kit and several spare inner tubes for each support team. Check tyre sizes during registration or before the event so the spare tubes match the bicycles taking part.
How many walkie-talkies are needed for a bike parade?
Provide one walkie-talkie for every essential communication point: usually the lead, rear support, start, finish and each traffic post. Confirm the final number after assigning volunteers, then charge them at least one day in advance.
When should I buy supplies for a bike parade?
Buy durable equipment and repair supplies at least one week before the parade. Purchase drinks, ice and other perishable items one to two days beforehand, after checking the registration total and weather forecast.
