What to buy and pack for an adventure trip

A good adventure trip needs more than food and a backpack. You need enough water for the route, compact lunch packs, weatherproof navigation materials and safety equipment for every group. Check dietary requirements before shopping, then chill drinks and prepare the packs close to departure. This list also covers items people often forget, such as spare power, emergency blankets, whistles and waterproof storage.

Tips

  • Plan at least 2 litres of drinking water per person for a full day, and add extra water when the forecast is warm or the route has no refill point. Use reusable water bottles and keep reserve drinks in coolers.
  • Prepare one lunch pack per participant, including any dietary alternatives collected during registration. Pack food in waterproof bags and bring cutting boards, kitchen knives and serving tongs if food needs to be prepared or shared on site.
  • Give each group a waterproof route map, a compass, a whistle and a charged power bank. Print a spare map for the supervisor rather than relying on a phone signal that may disappear along the route.
  • Pack one first aid kit for each larger group and add emergency blankets, hand warmers and flashlights or headlamps. These items are easy to overlook because they may not be used, but they matter if someone is delayed or injured.
  • Count backpacks, hiking poles, reflective vests and walkie-talkies by group before loading the transport. Add waterproof tarps, towels and washing-up tubs so wet or dirty equipment does not end up mixed with food and luggage.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for an adventure trip?
Plan 2 litres per person for a full day outdoors, then add more for warm weather, steep terrain or a route without refill points. Keep reserve water in coolers at the start or rest stops.
What food should I buy for an adventure trip?
Buy one portable lunch pack per participant, plus snacks for the route and dietary alternatives. Confirm allergies and dietary requirements before shopping, ideally at least 3 days before departure.
What safety equipment is needed for an adventure trip?
Each group should have access to a first aid kit, emergency blankets, whistles, charged phones or walkie-talkies and a power bank. Add flashlights or headlamps when any part of the trip could continue after daylight.
When should I prepare the shopping and lunch packs?
Do the main shopping 1 to 2 days before the trip so you can check quantities and dietary needs. Assemble lunch packs on the day of departure, chill drinks beforehand and load equipment only after every group has been counted.
