Weekend camp shopping list

A weekend camp needs more than tents and sleeping bags. Plan food and drinks by meal, keep refrigerated items chilled, and pack cooking equipment that can handle the whole group. You will also need tableware, lighting, registration supplies and a few items for activities. Use the participant count to set quantities, then check dietary requirements and emergency contacts before shopping.

Tips

  • Plan one portion of each meal per participant, plus around 10% extra for unexpected arrivals or larger appetites. Sort the groceries by breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks before packing.
  • Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour of arrival, then about one drink per person per hour. Bring reusable cups and keep chilled drinks in coolers until they are needed.
  • Count one tent space, sleeping mat and sleeping bag per participant, and check every item before departure. Inflate or open the tents at least one day before the camp to find missing or damaged gear.
  • Pack cooking equipment around the largest meal: one large cooking pot, cutting boards, a chef’s knife, serving spoons and measuring cups. Check the gas stove and gas cylinders before loading them, rather than discovering a problem at camp.
  • Bring at least one LED lamp for the registration area and one for the kitchen, with extra lighting for paths or shared spaces. Set up the registration desk, participant list and arrival signs before the first people arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How much food do I need for a weekend camp?
Plan one full serving per participant for every main meal, with about 10% extra for seconds and unexpected changes. Add breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks separately so you do not run short on one meal while overbuying another.
How many drinks should I bring for a weekend camp?
For arrival, plan two to three drinks per person during the first hour. After that, allow roughly one drink per person per hour, and add extra water for warm weather or outdoor games.
How many tents and sleeping bags do I need?
Provide one suitable sleeping space, sleeping mat and sleeping bag for each participant. Check the final registration list at least 24 hours before departure so you can fill any gaps before packing.
When should I buy food for a weekend camp?
Buy dry goods and shelf-stable items one to two days before departure. Purchase refrigerated goods as late as practical, keep them chilled, and sort all groceries by meal before leaving.
