What you need for a waste track
A waste track needs more than bags and litter pickers. Participants need clear route information, numbered bibs, refreshments and basic bike support, while volunteers need visible safety gear and reliable communication. Set aside equipment for registration, weighing and sorting waste at the finish. Buy or collect disposable-free serving items early, then check quantities against your registration list at least one week before the event.

Tips
- Prepare one registration setup with desks, laptops, bib numbers, bib holders and route maps. Print a small reserve of bibs and maps so late registrations or damaged copies do not slow down the start.
- Plan drinks for the registered group, including reusable cups, coffee cups, plates, cutlery and serving trays. Chill drinks before the event and keep hot-drink equipment separate from the registration area.
- Give route volunteers safety vests, litter pickers, waste bins or crates and walkie-talkies. Provide one clearly marked collection point at the finish so collected waste can be weighed and sorted without blocking arrivals.
- Pack a bike-support kit for the route: bike pumps, spare inner tubes and bike tool kits. Check the equipment before loading it and place the pump and tools where a support volunteer can reach them quickly.
- Allow for weather and early setup when collecting furniture and lighting. Party tents, tables, chairs, LED lamps, extension cords, coolers and mobile chargers should be checked at least two days before the event.
Frequently asked questions
- What should I buy for a waste track?
- Plan for registration supplies, route maps, bib numbers, reusable serving items, drinks, safety vests, litter pickers, waste containers and bike-repair equipment. Add communication and lighting equipment if volunteers will be spread along the route or setup starts before daylight.
- How many reusable cups do I need for a waste track?
- Have at least one cup per registered participant, plus around 10% extra for volunteers, replacements and cups still in use. For 50 participants, prepare at least 55 reusable cups and enough drinks for the planned breaks.
- When should I prepare the waste track equipment?
- Confirm furniture, communication equipment, bike tools and waste containers at least one week before the event. Chill drinks, bundle route signs and sort bib numbers during the final 24 hours.
- What bike equipment is needed for a waste track?
- Bring at least one bike pump, spare inner tubes and a bike tool kit for route support. For groups larger than 50 riders, prepare a second pump and duplicate the most likely replacement parts.
