Walking Weekend shopping list
A Walking Weekend needs more than snacks and walking shoes. You will need food and drinks for the group, serving equipment for the reception point, and practical supplies for routes, luggage and changing weather. Plan chilled products separately from non-perishable groceries, and check dietary requirements before shopping. Water containers, coolers, thermos flasks and power banks are easy to overlook until the group is already on the move.

Tips
- Allow at least 1.5 to 2 litres of drinking water per person per walking day, then add extra water for warm weather or limited refill points.
- Buy chilled food no earlier than the day before if possible, and keep it in coolers until it can be stored in a refrigerator. Pack non-perishable groceries separately so they are ready for loading.
- Count reusable cups, plates, bowls and cutlery against the expected number of participants, then add 10% extra for damage, loss or late arrivals.
- Charge power banks, phones and portable speakers the day before departure. Bring extension cords and power strips if the accommodation or reception area has few sockets.
- Put route cards, a compass, flashlights and headlamps with the walking equipment rather than in general luggage. This prevents the navigation supplies from being left behind during loading.
Frequently asked questions
- How much water do I need for a Walking Weekend?
- Plan on 1.5 to 2 litres per person for each walking day, plus extra water for cooking, coffee and handwashing. Add more if the route has no reliable refill points or the forecast is warm.
- When should I buy food for a Walking Weekend?
- Buy fresh and chilled products the day before departure, or on the morning of the event when possible. Purchase non-perishable groceries earlier, then store chilled food in coolers until it reaches a refrigerator.
- How many cups and plates should I bring?
- Bring one complete set per participant and add around 10% extra. For 30 walkers, that means at least 33 cups, plates, bowls and cutlery sets.
- What should I pack for walking in changing weather?
- Keep flashlights or headlamps, power banks, route cards and a compass accessible rather than buried in luggage. Check the forecast before departure and prepare an alternate route if conditions could affect the planned walk.
