Traffic Day shopping list
Use this list to shop for a Traffic Day with cycling activities, traffic-safety demonstrations and a marked route. Plan equipment for registration, route control, bike checks, games and short quiz activities, rather than buying everything at the last minute. Count participants before ordering catering and check that you have enough helmets, reflective vests and visibility equipment for every activity station. Weather protection, power access and waste collection are easy to overlook when most of the planning focuses on the course.

Tips
- Allow one working bike and one correctly sized helmet for each child using the course at the same time, plus at least two spare helmets and one spare bike for faults or incorrect sizing.
- Use one reflective vest for every traffic post and keep at least two extra vests at the registration desk. Pack stop signs, cones, barrier tape and route signs together so marshals can set up without searching for equipment.
- Bring one bike pump and one repair kit for every 15 to 20 bikes, and check bicycle lights before the event if any route section takes place in low light or under covered areas.
- Prepare registration materials for 10% more participants than the confirmed number. That covers late arrivals, replacement name stickers and dietary notes without sending someone out to shop during the event.
- Check the venueβs power points at least one week before Traffic Day. Test the mobile sound system, wireless microphones and extension cords together, and arrange battery-powered traffic lights if cables would cross the route.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need for a Traffic Day?
- You need route-control equipment such as cones, barriers, signs, reflective vests and stop signs, plus bikes, helmets, pumps and repair kits. Add registration supplies, activity materials, sound equipment, tables, chairs, waste bins and catering for the confirmed participant count.
- How many helmets and bikes should I buy for Traffic Day?
- Provide one helmet and one usable bike for each child taking part at the same time. Add at least 10% spare capacity, with a minimum of two spare helmets and one spare bike for faults, sizing problems or late arrivals.
- When should I check the Traffic Day equipment?
- Complete the stock check at least 7 days before the event, then test bikes, helmets, lights, the sound system and traffic lights again 1 day before. Pack route equipment by station so setup can start immediately.
- How much catering should I order for Traffic Day?
- Order for the final registration total plus 10% extra, and include dietary requirements collected during registration. Keep drinks and food ready before participants arrive, because the first busy period usually begins at check-in.
