Skate competition checklist and planning guide

A skate competition needs more than a course and a start time. You must settle the format, categories, rules, safety plan and permissions before opening registration. In the final weeks, participant details, judging paperwork, bibs, prizes and volunteer roles need to line up. This checklist also covers practical event-day details such as the registration desk, barriers, sound system, power and cleanup equipment, so late surprises do not disrupt the schedule.

Tips

  • Confirm the format, categories and rules before you open registration. Participants need to know whether they are entering heats, timed runs, judged runs or a final, and what each category requires.
  • Check permits, insurance and music permissions several weeks before the competition. Also record an emergency contact and finish the safety plan before inviting competitors.
  • Set a registration deadline at least 7 days before the event. Use the final participant list to create the starting lineup, prepare bibs and identify dietary requirements instead of trying to fix these at check-in.
  • Test the course and all technical equipment at least 1 day in advance. Check obstacles, cones, rubber mats, barriers, the sound system, microphones, extension cords, power strips and rechargeable batteries together.
  • Prepare a printed run sheet, jury forms, signs and backup communication before competitors arrive. Give judges stopwatches and paperwork, and keep walkie-talkies, a megaphone and power banks available when the venue is spread out.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I organise a skate competition?
Start venue, permit, insurance and format planning at least 8 weeks before the competition. Open registration only after the categories, rules and safety arrangements are confirmed.
When should skate competition registration close?
Close registration about 7 days before the event. That gives you time to update the participant list, create the starting lineup, prepare bibs and print the run sheet.
What equipment is needed for a skate competition?
Plan for obstacles, cones, rubber mats, barriers, bibs, a judges’ table, a registration desk and timing equipment. For announcements and coordination, allow at least 1 sound system, 1 microphone per speaking role, spare batteries and a way to charge phones or power banks.
How many volunteers do I need for a skate competition?
Use at least 1 competition leader, 2 registration volunteers, 2 course or safety volunteers and 2 judges for a small event. Add more course marshals when spectators and competitors share narrow access routes.
