What to bring for a scouting walk

A scouting walk needs more than food and water. You’ll need clear route materials, visible signs, communication equipment, weather protection and a way to manage participants at the start and checkpoints. Plan quantities by participant count, then add a small reserve for lost maps, damaged signs and unexpected delays. Pack supplies so each escort can carry what they need without returning to the starting point.

Tips

  • Prepare one route map per participant, plus at least 10% extra for replacements. Keep the maps in waterproof document sleeves if rain is possible.
  • Provide one reflective vest for every escort or route marshal, and place route arrows at every turn where walkers could take the wrong path. Bring extra marking tape for repairs.
  • Plan 500–750 ml of drinking water per person for a short walk, and more for warm weather or routes lasting over two hours. Use water jugs, reusable cups and coolers at the start or rest point.
  • Give each checkpoint a clipboard, pens, signs and a charged walkie-talkie where coverage is uncertain. Test all walkie-talkies and charging cables before participants arrive.
  • Pack one first aid kit for the group and keep emergency blankets, emergency ponchos, flashlights or headlamps and spare batteries with the lead escort. Do not leave these in the start area if the route extends beyond it.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a scouting walk?
Allow 500–750 ml per person for a short walk, with extra water for warm weather or walks longer than two hours. Add a reserve so the group is not dependent on a single refill point.
How many route maps should I print for a scouting walk?
Print one map per participant, one for each escort and at least 10% extra. For 40 participants, that means at least 44 maps before adding staff copies.
What safety equipment do I need for a scouting walk?
Pack at least one first aid kit, emergency blankets, emergency ponchos, flashlights or headlamps, spare batteries and whistles. Give every escort a reflective vest and check the kit 24 hours before departure.
When should I prepare the supplies for a scouting walk?
Finish shopping and inventory checks at least 2–3 days before the walk. Charge walkie-talkies and power banks the evening before, and chill drinks several hours before the start.
