What to bring for a scavenger hunt walk

A scavenger hunt walk needs more than clues and a route. Each team needs a complete set of maps, assignments and writing materials, while the route needs visible signs and checkpoint markers. Plan supplies for registration, refreshments, weather protection and basic safety before shopping. This checklist is suited to a walk with several teams, volunteers at the start and finish, and checkpoints along the route.

Tips

  • Prepare one team pack per group, plus at least 10% spare pens, clue cards and route maps. Keep each pack in a waterproof folder or envelope so rain does not ruin the instructions.
  • Use one clipboard and writing set for every team, and bring extra pencils for participants who lose or break a pen during the walk. Label packs with team wristbands or matching envelopes before arrival.
  • For a route with public crossings or low-light sections, pack reflective vests, traffic cones or cones, whistles and flashlights for the volunteers responsible for checkpoints. Check the route before placing any marker.
  • Bring a cooler for chilled food and drinks, plus thermos flasks, reusable cups, plates and cutlery for the finish. Pack serving trays and waste bins as well; these are easy to overlook until food is being served.
  • Set aside power banks, a megaphone and stopwatches at the registration table. Keep the first aid kit there too, and place directional signs and a notice board where every team can see the start instructions.
