What to bring for a sailing camp
A sailing camp needs more than boats and life jackets. You also need reliable safety and mooring gear, waterproof storage, camping equipment, cooking supplies and enough serving items for the group. Plan drinking water and food around the number of participants and days, then add a small reserve for delays or damaged equipment. Check dietary and medical information before buying meals, and make sure every participant has a sleeping place and suitable luggage storage.

Tips
- Count one place setting per participant, plus 10% spare plates, mugs and cutlery. Disposable cups are useful for welcome drinks and reduce washing up during the first evening.
- Plan at least 2β3 drinks per person for the first hour, then about 1 drink per person per hour. Keep extra drinking water in waterproof barrels rather than relying only on coolers.
- Match every participant to a life jacket before departure and keep spare sizes available. Check the jackets, boats, mooring lines, anchors and spare lines before loading the equipment.
- For camping, prepare one tent space, air mattress and sleeping bag per participant, plus a few extra tarps for wet gear or sudden rain. Label luggage before bringing it to the sleeping areas.
- Buy cooking fuel before the camp starts: one gas burner is rarely enough for a full group meal. Bring at least two burners, suitable gas cylinders, large cooking pots, cutting boards, knives and thermos flasks so food and hot drinks can be prepared in batches.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a sailing camp?
- You need sailboats, life jackets, paddles, mooring lines, anchors, a compass, waterproof barrels and spare lines. Add camping equipment, cooking gear and serving items for every participant.
- How many life jackets do I need for sailing camp?
- Plan one correctly fitting life jacket for every person on the water, including instructors and crew. Keep at least 10% spare jackets in a range of sizes if the group composition may change.
- How much food and water should I buy for a sailing camp?
- Base meals and drinking water on the confirmed participant count and number of camp days. For drinks, allow 2β3 per person in the first hour and about 1 per person per hour afterward, with extra water for hot weather and delays.
- When should I buy and check sailing camp supplies?
- Buy non-perishable food, fuel and disposable items at least 3β5 days before departure. Check boats, safety equipment, gas cylinders and camping gear again the day before, then load coolers and waterproof storage on departure day.
