What to Bring to a Running Clinic

A running clinic needs more than cones and a stopwatch. You’ll need equipment for drills, clearly marked route points, registration supplies, drinks, snacks and a practical setup for participants before and after the session. Plan quantities around your number of runners, and check power, shelter and first-aid supplies before shopping day. The list below covers the items that are easy to overlook until participants are already arriving.

Tips

  • Prepare one bib number and two safety pins per participant, plus at least 10% extra for late registrations or damaged numbers.
  • Use route signs, traffic cones and marking tape at every turn, crossing or exercise station. Walk the route once before the clinic and add spare signs for unclear sections.
  • Allow about 500–750 ml of water per runner for a short clinic, with extra if the weather is warm. Set out water dispensers or coolers where runners finish and regroup.
  • Pack one stopwatch, one interval timer and at least two whistles for the coach or helpers. Test the portable speaker, extension cords and power strips before participants arrive.
  • Keep the first aid kit and cold packs at the registration or finish point, not in a vehicle parked elsewhere. Provide hand sanitizer and waste bins beside the drinks and snack tables.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a running clinic?
Plan for route markers, traffic cones, marking tape, bib numbers, safety pins, a stopwatch, an interval timer and whistles. For drills, include training bibs, resistance bands and yoga mats, with at least 10% spare bibs and pins.
How much water should I buy for a running clinic?
Allow around 500–750 ml per participant for a short session, then add more for hot weather or a longer program. Keep the drinks chilled in coolers and place water dispensers where runners gather before and after running.
How many bib numbers and safety pins do I need?
Buy one bib number and two safety pins per registered runner. Add at least 10% extra, so a clinic with 30 runners needs 33 bibs and 66 pins as a practical minimum.
What should I prepare for bad weather at a running clinic?
Arrange a party tent and keep tables, registration materials and snacks under cover. Check the forecast 24 hours before the clinic and confirm that route signs, equipment and power connections can stay secure and dry.
