What you need for a roller skate event

A roller skate event needs more than skates and a start line. You’ll need safety gear, route-marking supplies, registration materials, equipment for communication and enough furniture for check-in and rest areas. This shopping list also covers items people often arrange too late, such as spare wheels, pumps, lighting and power supplies. Use it alongside your route plan to check quantities before participants arrive.

Tips

  • Prepare one helmet, knee pad set, elbow pad set and wrist guard set for every participant who needs to borrow protective gear. Keep a few spare sets available for last-minute replacements.
  • Buy or prepare route arrows and cones in advance, then check the route before opening registration. Have enough markers to identify every hazard zone and every unclear turn.
  • Allow one bib number and one wristband per registered participant, plus at least 10% extra for damaged items, late registrations and replacements.
  • For a longer outdoor event, provide at least one charged power bank per key coordinator and keep extension cords, power strips and battery lanterns together in a labelled equipment box.
  • Set aside spare wheels, Allen keys and bike pumps at the start and finish area. These are easy to forget and are much harder to source once skaters are already on the route.

Frequently asked questions

How many helmets and protective pads do I need for a roller skate event?
Plan one complete protective set per participant who is borrowing equipment: one helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. Add around 10% extra if you expect different sizes, damage or late arrivals.
How many bib numbers and wristbands should I buy?
Prepare one bib number and one wristband for each registered participant, then add at least 10% spare. For 100 participants, that means preparing 110 of each.
What safety equipment should I bring to a roller skate event?
Bring helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, cones, route arrows, safety vests, spare wheels, Allen keys and bike pumps. Check all borrowed or shared protective gear before the event, preferably at least one day in advance.
When should I arrange lighting and power for an outdoor skate event?
Check power access and test the sound system, microphone, extension cords and power strips at least 24 hours beforehand. Charge power banks and mobile phones the same day, and bring LED lamps or battery lanterns for areas used after dark.
