What you need for a powerlifting competition

A powerlifting competition needs more than a platform, rack and barbell. You also need reliable weighing and scoring equipment, enough tables and seating, clear communication tools, and practical supplies for lifters, judges and volunteers. Check every item against the number of competitors, weight classes and competition sessions. Arrange specialist equipment early, then test the scale, printer, microphone and display timer before meet day so small technical problems do not delay the first lift.

Tips

  • Plan at least one complete equipment check before competition day. Test the competition platform, squat rack, bench, barbell, discs, clamps and display timer together rather than checking each item in isolation.
  • Allow one scoring and registration station with a laptop, printer, calculators and extension cords. Bring spare paper and place the printer close enough to the competition desk that results can be printed without crossing the lifting area.
  • Set out the scale and measuring tape before the first weigh-in. Keep the scale on a firm, level surface and test it with a known weight; a late scale problem can hold up every starting group.
  • Bring more reusable cups than the expected number of people for one serving each, then plan washing or collection between sessions. Waste bins and clearly placed tables prevent cups and paperwork from building up around the platform.
  • Prepare the sound and lighting setup before volunteers and lifters arrive. Test the PA system, microphone, speakers, LED lights, cable reels and power strips, and secure cables so they do not run through walkways.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a powerlifting competition?
You need a competition platform, squat rack, powerlifting barbell, bench press bench, competition discs, weight plate clamps, a weight rack and a magnesium tray. Add a scale, scoring equipment, a PA system and a display timer for weigh-ins and the meet itself.
How many weight plates do I need for a powerlifting meet?
The exact amount depends on the heaviest planned lifts and how many platforms run at once. Prepare enough competition discs to load the heaviest attempt on every active platform, plus training discs for warm-ups and a separate storage rack.
What should I bring for scoring a powerlifting competition?
Bring a laptop, printer, calculators, prepared score sheets and extension cords or power strips. Have the scoring station ready at least 60 minutes before the first weigh-in, with spare paper available for registration and results.
What do I need for competitor weigh-ins?
Set up the scale, measuring tape, tables, chairs and participant paperwork before registration opens. Test the scale on the day and leave at least 30 minutes before the first official weigh-in to resolve missing details or equipment issues.
