What to Bring for a Photo Camp

A photo camp needs more than cameras. You also need enough memory, power, lighting, backdrops, laptops and serving supplies to keep several groups working without waiting. Plan one usable camera setup per assignment group, plus spares for batteries and storage. For food and drinks, count every participant, organiser and instructor, then add a small buffer. This shopping list covers the equipment, photo materials and catering items that are easy to overlook until setup day.

Tips

  • Allow at least one camera, memory card and card reader per working group, and keep spare batteries and chargers available before the first photo walk. A single missing card reader can delay the entire transfer session.
  • For studio work, prepare one LED photo lamp and one reflector for each active setup. Bring backdrop clamps as well as backdrop cloths; the cloth alone will not stay in place.
  • Count laptops and USB sticks against the number of groups rather than the total headcount. If four groups edit at once, four working laptops and at least four USB sticks prevent a queue at the end of the day.
  • Pack extension cords and power strips before loading the projector and screen. Test the cable reach in the workshop space, especially if tables are arranged away from the nearest wall outlet.
  • For catering, provide one reusable cup, plate and cutlery set per person, plus 10% extra. Chill drinks in coolers in advance, and use thermos flasks for hot drinks so serving does not depend on a kitchen nearby.

Frequently asked questions

How many cameras do I need for a photo camp?
Plan for one camera per assignment group so participants can work at the same time. Add at least one spare camera if the budget and equipment allow, especially for a full-day camp.
How many spare batteries and memory cards should I bring?
Bring at least two charged batteries per camera and one formatted spare memory card per camera. Keep chargers available and check every card before participants arrive.
How much food and drink should I buy for a photo camp?
Count one lunch, two snack portions and drinks for each participant, instructor and organiser. Add 10% extra cups, plates and cutlery, and keep drinks cold before the first break.
What photo materials are easy to forget?
Backdrop clamps, card readers, USB sticks, extension cords and power strips are commonly missed. Check these items at least one day before the camp, then test the projector, laptops and lamps before setup.
