What you need for a pétanque tournament

A pétanque tournament needs more than boules and a marked playing area. You’ll need enough equipment for every court, plus clear scoring supplies, shade, seating and a simple catering setup for breaks. This shopping list covers the practical items to buy, borrow or bring, from measuring tools and field markers to reusable cups, serving equipment and cooling gear. Confirm your final player count before buying food, drinks and tableware, and check deliveries several days before the tournament.

Tips

  • Plan one complete pétanque set for each active court, then keep at least one spare boule set available for damage or missing equipment. Count target balls and measuring tools separately; they are easy to overlook when ordering sets.
  • Bring enough field markers and cones to identify every playing area, boundary and waiting zone. Mark the courts before players arrive so the registration table is not dealing with setup questions at the same time.
  • For catering, count one plate, fork, knife and reusable cup per person, then add around 10% spare. Pack serving platters, serving spoons, cutting boards and bread knives separately so food preparation does not depend on the tournament equipment.
  • Provide shade and seating for players between rounds, not only for the catering area. Check the number of folding tables, chairs and tents against the expected attendance, and arrange delivery or collection before tournament day.
  • Prepare for changing light and power needs even if matches start during the day. Test the mobile sound system before opening, and bring LED lanterns or light strings if registration, catering or prize presentations may continue after sunset.

Frequently asked questions

How many pétanque sets do I need for a tournament?
Start with one complete set for each court that will be used at the same time. Add one spare set for the tournament, especially if players bring mixed equipment or the event has more than 20 participants.
How much food and drink should I buy for a pétanque tournament?
For a tournament lasting several hours, plan at least 1 litre of water and 2 to 3 drinks per person, plus food for one substantial break. Buy the final quantities after registration closes, usually 3 to 5 days before the event.
How many cups, plates and cutlery items do I need?
Allow one of each item per attendee, plus 10% spare; for 40 people, that means at least 44 cups, plates, forks and knives. Reusable tableware also needs a collection point and enough washing or storage capacity.
When should I check the tournament equipment delivery?
Check every delivery 3 to 5 days before the tournament, including boules, target balls, measuring tools, scoreboards and field markers. Test the sound system and coffee equipment no later than the day before.
