Pétanque tournament checklist

A pétanque tournament runs smoothly when registration, court planning and match timing are settled before event day. This checklist takes you from reserving the playing area and checking permissions to closing entries, drawing pools and preparing food and drinks. It also covers the details that are easy to miss, such as measuring and marking courts, testing the sound system and keeping score sheets ready. Use it to work through the plan in order and give volunteers clear jobs.

Tips

  • Close the participant list before drawing teams and pools. Allow at least 3–5 days to check names, collect dietary requirements and publish the final match schedule.
  • Measure and mark the playing area before setting out tables and chairs. Keep a tape measure, distance measure, markers, target balls and cones together at the registration point so court issues can be resolved quickly.
  • Allow 30–45 minutes before the first match for equipment checks. Lay out pétanque sets, scoreboards, markers and scorecard pens by court rather than leaving everything in one central box.
  • Start chilling drinks several hours before play begins, especially if using cool boxes. Prepare the catering tables with reusable cups, plates, cutlery, serving platters and jugs before participants arrive.
  • Test the mobile sound system and set up tents, lighting and seating before registration opens. A final 60-minute walk-through should include deliveries, prizes, medals, score sheets and volunteer positions.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I organise a pétanque tournament?
Start planning at least 6–8 weeks ahead. Reserve the playing area, check permission requirements and open registration first; order prizes and confirm catering once you have a reliable participant count.
How many pétanque courts do I need for a tournament?
Plan one court for each match running at the same time, then add at least 10–15% extra space for walkways and spectators. Final court numbers depend on team size, match length and the number of rounds.
When should I close registration for a pétanque tournament?
Close registration 3–5 days before the tournament. That gives you time to confirm dietary requirements, form teams and pools, create the schedule and print scoresheets without last-minute changes.
What should I prepare on the morning of a pétanque tournament?
Allow 2–3 hours for setup, plus at least 30 minutes for the final check. Mark the courts, arrange seating and tents, prepare registration and catering tables, chill drinks, test the sound system and place equipment at each court.
