Pétanque tournament checklist: what to arrange and when
A pétanque tournament needs more than boules and a playing area. You need a clear court layout, confirmed players, a workable match schedule and someone responsible for registration, scoring and announcements. Catering, shade and weather planning also take time, especially when several matches run at once. Use this checklist to work from the first booking through the final site inspection, so late tasks do not disrupt the tournament.

Tips
- Set the court layout before publishing the registration details. Measure the playing area and mark each lane clearly, leaving enough space for players and spectators to move safely between courts.
- Close registrations early enough to create the match schedule and print scorecards. Confirm the final participant list before the event day, rather than trying to solve missing teams at the registration desk.
- Assign volunteers to specific jobs, not just to “help out.” Have separate people available for registration, scoreboards, announcements, catering and checking equipment during the tournament.
- Check catering against the registration list at least one week before the event. Dietary requirements are easy to lose between registration and ordering, and drinks need time to chill in coolers before the first matches.
- Review the weather forecast and inspect the site on the day before setup. Put tents, parasols, tables and power equipment where they will not block lanes, registration or serving areas, and keep a backup plan for rain.
Frequently asked questions
- How far in advance should I organise a pétanque tournament?
- Set the date and location at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Open registrations soon after, then leave at least 7 days before the tournament to confirm players, finalise the schedule and order prizes and catering.
- How many pétanque courts do I need for a tournament?
- Plan one marked lane for each match taking place at the same time. For example, 16 teams playing in 8 simultaneous matches need 8 lanes, plus extra space for registration, spectators and safe movement between courts.
- When should I make the pétanque tournament schedule?
- Create the schedule after registrations close and the participant list is confirmed, usually 5 to 7 days before the event. Print scorecards, schedules and rules in advance so play can start without delays at registration.
- What equipment is easy to forget for a pétanque tournament?
- Measuring tapes, goal balls, lane markers, scoreboards and scoreboard markers are often missed, even when pétanque sets are booked. Check these items at least 3 days beforehand, along with a megaphone, whistles and extension cords if announcements or catering need power.
