What you need for a para-cycling race
A para-cycling race needs more than bikes and a marked course. Your shopping list must cover rider identification, accessible event support, route control, timing, repairs, hydration and clear communication. Plan quantities from your registered rider count, volunteer posts and course layout, then add spares for anything that can stop the race if it fails. The checklist below brings those purchases and rentals together so you can prepare before race week instead of sourcing essential equipment on the morning.

Tips
- Prepare one race bib and strap for every rider, then keep at least 10 spare sets for damaged, lost or last-minute replacement numbers. Print the final rider list only after registrations and the starting lineup are closed.
- Count route arrows and traffic cones by junction, not by course length. Give every turn a visible arrow and keep extra signs and ribbon at the start area for quick replacement during setup.
- Plan hydration in crates rather than loose bottles: allow at least two bottles per rider for the first hour, with additional stock for volunteers and delays. Place water where riders can reach it without crossing active traffic lanes.
- Book timing equipment, a competition clock and the laptop together, and test the full setup at least 24 hours before the race. Bring extension cords, power strips and a backup timing procedure in case power or connectivity fails.
- Set up a repair point with a bike repair stand, pumps, basic tools and spare inner tubes before riders arrive. Keep it close to the paddock or start area, with a volunteer assigned to direct riders who need help.
Frequently asked questions
- What should I buy for a para-cycling race?
- Plan for bib numbers and straps, route arrows, course ribbon, cones, hydration crates, repair equipment, timing equipment, radios, phones and a sound system. Add tents, tables, chairs, waste bins and bicycle racks according to your rider and volunteer count.
- How many spare race numbers do I need?
- Prepare one bib and strap per registered rider, plus at least 10 spare sets for replacements. If you expect more than 100 riders, round the spare stock up to 10% of the field.
- How much water is needed for a cycling race?
- Start with two bottles per rider for the first hour, then add stock for volunteers, officials and delays. Keep the water in clearly marked crates and arrange extra supplies if the course is long or the weather is warm.
- When should I test the timing system?
- Test the timing system, laptop, competition clock and power connections at least 24 hours before the race. Repeat a short run-through during setup on race day, before riders enter the start area.
