What you need for an Othello tournament

Running an Othello tournament takes more than boards and pieces. You also need enough clocks, score sheets, signs and registration materials to keep rounds moving without borrowing supplies halfway through the day. Plan one playing setup per match, plus spares for damaged or missing equipment. This checklist also covers drinks, serving items and practical venue supplies, so registration, catering and the opening briefing can run on schedule.

Tips

  • Count one Othello board, complete set of pieces and game clock for every match played at the same time. Add at least one spare board and one spare clock if the tournament cannot pause for equipment problems.
  • Prepare one name badge and one participant form for every player, then bring extra pens and forms for late corrections. Put the forms on clipboards at the registration desk so players do not need to share a table.
  • Print one match sheet for each scheduled match, with extra copies for replays or results entered incorrectly. Keep round cards and match sheets in separate binders so the next round can be handed out quickly.
  • Use table numbers and directional signs before participants arrive, especially if registration and playing areas are separate. Tape signs in place and keep a few spare signs nearby in case the venue changes an entrance or room.
  • Plan reusable cups, plates and cutlery for the full participant count, plus a small reserve for staff and replacements. Chill drinks before opening and prepare coffee machines, kettles and thermos flasks early enough to cover the first break.

Frequently asked questions

How many Othello boards do I need for a tournament?
You need one board for each match played at the same time. For example, 16 players in an elimination round require 8 boards; keep at least 1 spare board if possible.
How many game clocks are needed for an Othello tournament?
Buy or bring one game clock per active match, so 8 clocks for 8 simultaneous matches. A spare clock prevents one failure from delaying an entire round.
What paperwork should I print for an Othello tournament?
Prepare one participant form and name badge per registered player, plus one match sheet for every scheduled match. Print at least 10% extra copies for corrections, replays and late registrations.
When should I prepare the tournament supplies?
Check boards, pieces, clocks and printed paperwork at least 1 day before the tournament. Set up the registration desk, table numbers and catering supplies 60–90 minutes before participants arrive.
