What you need for Neighbour Day

A Neighbour Day gathering needs more than snacks and drinks. Plan for shared food, outdoor serving, coffee, name badges and enough tableware for residents who arrive throughout the day. This shopping list also covers practical items that are easy to overlook, such as cooling packs, food containers, serving utensils and a thermos. Check quantities against your registration list, then add a small buffer for unplanned guests and second helpings.

Tips

  • Count one complete place setting per registered guest, then add 10% extra. Include dinner and dessert plates, forks, knives, spoons and drinking glasses so a busy serving table does not run short.
  • Plan two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then one drink per person for each additional hour. Keep chilled food and drinks in cool boxes with cooling packs until they are needed.
  • For a shared buffet, provide at least one serving utensil per dish. Serving platters, tongs and a soup ladle are easy to forget when several neighbours bring food at the same time.
  • If coffee is served, allow one coffee cup and spoon per expected coffee drinker, plus enough capacity in the coffee maker, kettle and thermos for the first round. Do not leave hot drinks until the last minute; set up 30 minutes before serving.
  • Buy or gather food storage containers, aluminium foil and a cutting board before shopping day. Prepare sauces, dips and cut vegetables in advance, then keep them covered and cool until the programme starts.

Frequently asked questions

How much food should I buy for Neighbour Day?
For a meal-style gathering, allow about 500 to 700 grams of food per adult, including salads, bread and snacks. Add 10% if registration is informal or guests can arrive without signing up.
How many plates and glasses do I need for Neighbour Day?
Provide one dinner plate, one dessert plate and one drinking glass per registered guest, plus 10% spare. For 50 guests, that means at least 55 of each item.
When should I buy fresh food for Neighbour Day?
Buy fresh produce one day before the event where possible, and keep it chilled immediately after shopping. Prepare cut vegetables and dips on the day itself, no more than 4 hours before serving.
How many tables and chairs are needed for a neighbourhood event?
Plan one chair per seated guest and roughly one folding table for every 8 to 10 people for food, registration or activities. Confirm rentals and delivery times at least 7 days before Neighbour Day.
