Nature Work Day Shopping List

A nature work day needs more than gardening tools. Plan supplies for registration, safety instructions, shared drinks, food, weather protection and a clear work area. Reusable cups, plates and cutlery reduce waste, while coolers and thermos flasks keep drinks available throughout the day. Check the number of registered participants before shopping, then add enough gloves, eye protection and tools for each workgroup rather than assuming people will bring their own.

Tips

  • Plan at least one pair of work gloves and one set of safety goggles per active participant. Add spare pairs if tools such as hedge trimmers, pruning shears or hand saws will be shared between groups.
  • For a half-day work session, provide roughly 1.5 litres of water per person, plus extra hot drinks if the weather is cool. Use water jugs, coolers and thermos flasks so refreshments remain available away from the tables.
  • Match tools to the work orders before buying or packing them. Count rakes, hoes, pruning shears and saws by workgroup, and label shared equipment so it can be returned after the final task.
  • Allow one folding table for registration and another for food and drinks. A party tent, tablecloth and coolers are easy to overlook but become essential if rain or strong sun arrives during setup.
  • Prepare one waste station near the food area and another near the work area. Pack reusable plates, cups, cutlery and serving utensils together, and bring ice packs early enough to chill drinks before participants arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How many gloves and safety goggles do I need for a nature work day?
Buy one pair of work gloves and one set of safety goggles for every person expected to use tools. For 20 participants, that means at least 20 pairs of gloves and 20 sets of goggles, plus a few spare sets for damaged or forgotten equipment.
How much water should I buy for a nature work day?
Allow about 1.5 litres of water per participant for a half-day session, then add more for hot weather or strenuous work. For 20 people, prepare at least 30 litres and keep additional drinking water available during breaks.
What food and serving equipment is needed for a nature work day?
Plan food for every registered participant and pack reusable plates, cups, cutlery, serving platters and serving spoons. Use cutting boards and chef’s or bread knives for preparation, and keep hot drinks in thermos flasks or serve them with a kettle and coffee maker.
When should I prepare the shopping list for a nature work day?
Check registrations and dietary requirements at least 3 days before the event, then shop for food, drinks and disposable backup supplies. Check tools, batteries, extension cords and weather protection no later than the day before setup.
