What to buy and bring for a nature walk

A group nature walk needs more than water bottles and comfortable shoes. This shopping list covers the practical supplies for registration, route marking, rest stops, lunch, lighting and basic safety. Plan quantities from your final participant list, then add a small buffer for drinks, cups and food. Check the forecast before shopping, especially if you need shelter, warm drinks or extra lighting.

Tips

  • Plan drinks for about 2 to 3 servings per person for the first hour, then add extra water for the rest of the route. Bring coolers and ice packs if drinks or lunch packs must stay cold.
  • Prepare one route map per group leader and a few spare copies for participants. Pack waterproof markers, clipboards and pens together so route changes can be made at the rest stop.
  • For lunch, count one plate, cup and set of cutlery per participant, plus about 10% extra. Reusable tableware is easy to forget when the shopping is split between food and equipment.
  • Match lighting to the finish time, not the start time. Provide a headlamp or flashlight for each guide, and test battery lanterns and light points at least one day before the walk.
  • Keep first aid kits, safety vests, whistles and emergency blankets together at the registration desk or with the lead guide. Charge walkie-talkies and power banks the night before, then check them again before participants arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How much water do I need for a nature walk?
Plan at least 1 litre of drinking water per person for a half-day walk, and more in warm weather. Add 2 to 3 drinks per person for the first hour if you are serving coffee, tea or other drinks at the start.
How many lunch packs should I prepare for a group walk?
Prepare one lunch pack for every registered participant, plus 5 to 10% extra. Confirm dietary requirements before shopping and keep a separate, clearly marked option for special diets.
How many route maps do I need for a nature walk?
Print one map for each guide or walkie-talkie holder, one for the registration desk and at least 10% spare copies. Prepare them no later than the day before, after the route and rest stops have been checked.
When should I check the nature walk equipment?
Do a full equipment check 24 hours before the walk, including safety gear, route-marking supplies, lighting and power banks. Test walkie-talkies and lights again when setting up on the day.
