What you need for a national cycling championship
A national cycling championship needs more than bikes and a finish line. You will need clearly marked course equipment, race numbers, timing and results equipment, communication tools and supplies for officials, volunteers and spectators. Catering also requires advance planning, especially when dietary requirements are collected during registration. Use this list to check what must be bought, hired or brought to the venue before race week, rather than discovering missing essentials during course setup.

Tips
- Prepare spare bib numbers before registration closes. Have enough for replacements, late corrections and damaged numbers, and keep them with the timing equipment rather than at the catering desk.
- Check the course-sign order against the final traffic plan at least 7 days before setup. Include steering signs and round signs for every junction, turn and restricted access point.
- Test the timing set, laptop, printers, wireless microphones and walkie-talkies together at least 24 hours before the first race. Pack extension cords, power strips and generators as a separate technical kit.
- Count reusable glasses, coffee cups, plates and cutlery against the confirmed catering headcount, then add a practical reserve of about 10%. Arrange extra coffee pots and thermos flasks if officials and volunteers are stationed away from the main catering area.
- Set aside finish-ribbon supplies, medals and cups before the event opens. Keep them with the finish team, while tables, chairs, tents, waste bins and clothing racks are placed according to the venue and volunteer briefing.
Frequently asked questions
- What equipment do I need for a national cycling championship?
- Plan for course and finish equipment, including bib numbers, spare bib numbers, steering signs, round signs and a finish ribbon. You will also need a timing set, laptop, printers, walkie-talkies and a sound system with microphones and speakers.
- How many spare race numbers should I order?
- Order spare bib numbers for registration changes, damage and last-minute replacements rather than only matching the entry list. A reserve of around 5β10% of the confirmed field is a useful starting point, with the final quantity checked after registrations close.
- When should I order catering supplies for the championship?
- Confirm the participant, official, volunteer and spectator catering numbers at least 7 days before the event. Final dietary requirements should be passed to the caterer before that deadline, so portions, plates, cups and serving equipment can be adjusted.
- When should I check the race timing equipment?
- Test the complete timing setup at least 24 hours before the first race, including the laptop, printers, power connections and result workflow. Bring backup power and extension equipment to avoid losing timing data because of a venue connection problem.
