What you need for a motocross competition

A motocross competition needs more than bikes and a track. This shopping list covers the practical items that keep riders identified, officials connected, spectators separated from the course and the paddock supplied throughout race day. Plan power, water, tools and weather cover early, because generators, starting gates, transponders and crowd barriers are often hired rather than bought. Check quantities against the number of riders, race classes and expected spectators before placing orders.

Tips

  • Allow at least one bib number for every registered rider, plus a small spare set for late changes or damaged numbers. Print the final participant list after registration closes so officials are not working from an outdated grid.
  • Plan one communication method for each key official or marshal position. Walkie-talkies are useful for the course team, while microphones, speakers and megaphones cover announcements when engine noise makes normal speech difficult.
  • Do not leave power planning until race morning. Match generators to the sound system, timing equipment and lighting, then add extension cords and cable reels long enough to keep cables away from wet areas and vehicle routes.
  • Keep a separate tool and recovery area in the paddock. Toolboxes, tire levers, an air compressor and spare helmets should be easy to reach before practice starts, not buried behind motorcycles and transport vehicles.
  • Estimate water and cooling needs for the whole programme, not just the start. Water tanks, sprayers, coolers and party tents are especially easy to overlook when a hot, dusty track brings more demand than expected.

Frequently asked questions

What should I buy for a motocross competition?
Start with rider identification, competition flags, transponders and round-time tracking. Add starting gates, crowd barriers, barrier tape, sound equipment, generators, tools, water tanks and emergency blankets based on the number of riders and the course layout.
How many bib numbers do I need for a motocross race?
Prepare one complete number set per registered rider and keep at least 5 to 10 spare numbers available. Order or print them before the participant list is final if registration changes close to race day.
How much drinking water is needed at a motocross event?
Budget at least 2 litres of drinking water per person for a full hot day, then add extra for riders, officials and medical support. Arrange water tanks separately for track spraying, because drinking supplies should not be used for dust control.
When should motocross equipment be arranged?
Reserve hired items such as starting gates, crowd barriers, transponders, generators and sound equipment at least 4 to 6 weeks before the competition. Check, load and test everything the day before, including cables, radios and timing equipment.
