What to buy for a King’s Day party
A King’s Day party needs more than orange decorations and drinks. Plan food and beverages around your guest count, then check that you have enough reusable plates, bowls, cups, cutlery and serving equipment for the full event. Outdoor plans also need practical supplies: coolers, ice packs, party tents and tables if the weather changes. Coffee equipment, music gear and game materials are easy to overlook until guests arrive, so check them several days before the party.

Tips
- Allow two to three drinks per person for the first hour, then one to two drinks per person for each additional hour. Buy extra water and keep part of the stock chilled in coolers before guests arrive.
- For a buffet, plan one plate, bowl, cup, fork, knife and spoon per guest, plus at least 10% extra. Add serving platters and serving utensils so guests are not using personal cutlery to serve food.
- Keep fresh produce and chilled items in coolers with ice packs, not just in shopping bags. Pick up groceries as close to the start time as possible, and keep backup ice available for the final hours.
- For coffee and tea, allow one cup per guest who is likely to drink it, plus about 10% extra. Check the coffee machines, kettles, thermos flasks, coffee cups and spoons before the day itself.
- If the party is outdoors, arrange party tents, tables and seating before checking the final forecast. Put the speaker and mixer somewhere dry, and keep a rain backup plan ready at least one day ahead.
Frequently asked questions
- What do I need for a King’s Day party?
- Plan drinks, food, orange decorations, reusable tableware, serving dishes, coolers with ice packs, coffee supplies and music equipment. For outdoor parties, add a party tent, tables and seating, and check everything at least 3 days before the event.
- How many drinks should I buy per person for King’s Day?
- Buy enough for 2 to 3 drinks per person during the first hour, followed by 1 to 2 drinks per person for every additional hour. Include water and keep at least one extra round chilled as a buffer.
- How many plates and cups do I need for a party?
- Use one plate and cup per guest for a short event, then add at least 10% extra for replacements. If food is served in bowls or guests will stay for several hours, plan one bowl and extra cups per person as well.
- When should I buy groceries for a King’s Day party?
- Buy shelf-stable items and drinks 2 to 3 days ahead. Pick up fresh produce and chilled food on the day itself or no more than 24 hours beforehand, then cool it immediately.
