What to buy for a jumping competition

A jumping competition needs more than fences and ribbons. You will need equipment for the course, clear registration and judging points, supplies for horses, and practical gear for volunteers and spectators. Plan quantities around the number of competitors, horses, judges and helpers, rather than buying one of everything. The easiest items to overlook are bib holders, printer supplies, manure-handling tools, water points and weather cover for the secretariat and jury table.

Tips

  • Prepare one bib number and one bib holder for every competitor, plus at least 10 spare numbers for replacements or late changes. Keep the current start list at the registration desk and print a backup copy.
  • Provide one judging table with enough folding chairs for the judges and secretary, then add a separate registration desk. A party tent over each work area prevents paperwork and equipment from being ruined by rain.
  • Plan horse supplies by the number of horses on site: allow at least one water trough and one hay net per holding area, and place wheelbarrows, manure forks and scoops where they can be reached without crossing the course.
  • Check the jumping equipment against the course plan before competition day. Count the obstacles, springboards, cones, sponsor poles and fence anchors, and keep spare anchors and replacement course markers available.
  • Test the PA system, speakers and wireless microphones at least one day before the event. Keep a charged laptop, a working printer and spare paper ready for updated start lists, because registrations and withdrawals can change the running order.

Frequently asked questions

How many bib numbers do I need for a jumping competition?
Prepare one bib number per competitor and keep at least 10 spare numbers on site. If riders may enter more than one class, confirm whether they need one number per rider or separate numbers per entry before printing.
How many horse water troughs and hay nets should I buy?
Plan at least one water trough and one hay net for each separate holding area, then add one spare of each for cleaning or damage. For example, four holding areas require a minimum of four troughs and four hay nets.
How many tables and chairs are needed for the competition secretariat?
Allow one registration desk, one judges' table and at least one additional foldable table for paperwork or equipment. Provide one chair per person working at each station, plus two spare chairs; confirm the final number after volunteer assignments are complete.
When should I order prizes and ribbons for a jumping competition?
Order them at least 3 to 4 weeks before the competition, especially if they require event details or class information. Check the number of classes and planned placings before placing the order, then keep a small reserve of ribbons for corrections or ties.
