Tips

  • Prepare one bib number for every registered participant, then add at least 5–10% spare numbers for late changes, damaged prints or replacements. Keep the numbers sorted by starter group.
  • Allow one stopwatch per timekeeper, plus at least 2 spare batteries or a backup power bank for each timing station. Test every stopwatch before the first briefing.
  • Set out cones, marker discs and round signs before officials arrive. For a small track, prepare enough markers for every corner and keep 10–20% extra in case one is moved or damaged.
  • Provide one safety vest for each marshal or track-side volunteer, with at least 2 spare vests. Pack spare shoelaces and ice skate guards where participants can reach them before warm-up.
  • For refreshments, plan 2 reusable cups per person for a half-day event, plus 1 plate and 1 cutlery set per serving. Prepare at least 1 thermos flask per hot-drink station and check that the venue has enough sockets for coffee machines and kettles.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for an ice skating competition?
You need timing equipment, start signals, track markers, bib numbers, safety vests and communication equipment. Prepare one stopwatch per timekeeper, one bib number per participant and at least 10% spare markers and bibs.
How many bib numbers should I buy for an ice skating competition?
Buy one bib number for every confirmed participant and add 5–10% spares. For 60 skaters, prepare at least 63–66 bib numbers so replacements and late changes do not disrupt registration.
How many cups and plates do I need for the competition?
For a half-day event, plan 2 reusable cups per attendee, plus 1 plate and 1 cutlery set per person who will eat. Add 10% extra if spectators can arrive without registering.
When should I shop for an ice skating competition?
Complete the main shopping at least 3–5 days before the competition. Check prizes, bib numbers, batteries, cables and refreshments again the day before, when replacements are still possible.
