How to organise a Scrabble tournament

A Scrabble tournament runs smoothly when the format, timetable and equipment are settled before you invite anyone. Start by choosing how many rounds you can run, then reserve a venue with enough tables and seating for simultaneous games. Confirm registrations and dietary requirements early so you can plan snacks and match pairings accurately. Before the day, check every game, prepare score sheets and badges, and leave time to set up the registration, score and prize tables.

Tips

  • Choose the tournament format before sending invitations. Your number of rounds, game length and number of boards determine how many players you can accept and how long the venue must be available.
  • Set a registration deadline at least 7 days before the tournament. Use the final participant list to create the match schedule, print name badges and identify any missing players before match day.
  • Check every Scrabble game several days in advance, including boards, racks, letter bags, timers and spare letters. A missing tile or faulty timer can delay an entire round, so do not leave this check until setup.
  • Prepare one score sheet and enough pens or pencils for every active game, plus extras. Keep the score table separate from the prize table so results, calculators and competition cards do not get mixed up.
  • Arrive at the venue at least 60 minutes before registration opens. Set up the game tables first, then the registration desk, score table and prize table, and test the laptop, printer, extension cords and power strips before players arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How many tables do I need for a Scrabble tournament?
Plan for one game table per match, with two players at each table. For example, 24 players require 12 game tables for a round, plus separate space for registration, scoring and prizes.
How far in advance should I organise a Scrabble tournament?
Allow at least 3 to 4 weeks for a small tournament. Reserve the venue first, send invitations once the format is fixed, and close registrations about 7 days before the event so you can finish the schedule.
How long does a Scrabble tournament take?
Allow roughly 60 to 90 minutes per round, including setup, playing time and score collection. Add at least 30 minutes for registration and another 30 minutes for final results and prizes.
What should I check before a Scrabble tournament?
Check every board, letter bag, rack, dictionary, timer and set of spare letters at least 2 days beforehand. Also print score sheets and badges, confirm the venue access time, and test any printer or laptop you will use.
