What to buy for a handbike ride

A handbike ride needs more than refreshments at the start and finish. Pack for route marking, traffic control, basic repairs, communication and participants who may need accessible support. This shopping list covers the practical supplies for setting up the route, serving food and drinks, and keeping volunteers connected throughout the ride. Check quantities against your participant list, route length and expected time outdoors before you shop.

Tips

  • Plan at least one clearly marked route sign or arrow at every turn, junction and point where riders could take the wrong path. Bring extra cable ties so signs can be secured quickly.
  • Prepare one roadside assistance kit, a hand pump and spare inner tubes for each support vehicle or mobile repair point. Check that the tubes fit the handbikes taking part before the event.
  • Give each traffic marshal a reflective vest and provide walkie-talkies for key posts, the start, finish and any support vehicle. Charge all devices the evening before and keep power banks available.
  • Allow two to three drinks per participant for the first hour, then add more for warm weather or a longer route. Chill what you can in coolers and use serving jugs and reusable cups at the finish.
  • Count tables, chairs, tents and waste bins for the start and finish separately rather than moving them during the ride. Add extension cords, LED lamps or battery lanterns if setup or pack-down may happen in low light.

Frequently asked questions

What supplies do I need for a handbike ride?
Bring route arrows and signs, traffic cones or barriers, reflective vests, repair supplies, communication equipment, drinks, snacks and serving items. You will also need setup equipment such as tables, chairs, tents, waste bins and bicycle racks for the start and finish.
How many spare inner tubes should I buy for a handbike ride?
Plan at least one spare inner tube for every five participating handbikes, with a minimum of two for a small ride. Confirm the correct tube size and valve type with participants before shopping, because handbikes may use different wheel sizes.
How much water and drinks do I need for a handbike event?
For the first hour, allow two to three drinks per participant, then add roughly one drink per person for each additional hour. Increase the quantity in hot weather and keep a reserve for volunteers and support drivers.
When should I buy and prepare supplies for a handbike ride?
Buy non-perishable route, safety and serving supplies at least one week ahead. Purchase fresh food and chillable drinks one or two days before the ride, then check batteries, radios, pumps and signs the day before.
