What you need for a gymnastics competition

A gymnastics competition needs more than the apparatus on the floor. You also need practical supplies for judging, registration, hospitality, changing areas and audience seating. Use this shopping list to check that the gym floor, mats, apparatus and PA system are ready, then cover the less visible items such as cups, thermos flasks, waste bins and printed score sheets. Plan quantities around the number of gymnasts, judges and spectators expected.

Tips

  • Allow one table and two chairs for registration, plus a separate table and chairs for the judges. Keep spare chairs available for late arrivals and officials who need to work away from the competition floor.
  • Check every apparatus and mat at least one day before the event, including the bridge, beam, uneven bars, springboards, crash mats and landing mat. A missing mat or damaged piece cannot be solved quickly once warm-ups begin.
  • For hospitality, count two reusable cups per person if washing facilities are limited, and add enough coffee cups, tea glasses, plates and cutlery for the full audience and volunteer team. Set aside extra supplies for spills and late arrivals.
  • Prepare one printer, laptop and a backup supply of paper and ink for participant lists, score sheets and certificates. Print the first copies before the competition day so a technical problem does not stop registration or judging.
  • Place waste bins near the seating, hospitality area and changing rooms, and provide benches in the changing area. These are easy to overlook when the competition floor is given priority, but they affect the event from the first arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need for a gymnastics competition?
You need the competition floor, the required apparatus, suitable landing and crash mats, chalk trays and any event-specific accessories such as gymnastic ribbons. Check the equipment at least 24 hours before the first warm-up.
How many chairs and tables do I need for a gymnastics competition?
Plan one registration table with two chairs, a judges’ table with enough seats for the jury, and seating for every expected spectator and participant who will wait outside the floor area. Add 10% spare chairs where storage allows.
How much food and drink should I buy for a gymnastics competition?
For a short event, plan two drinks per person for the first two hours, then one additional drink per person for each following hour. Add coffee, tea, plates and cutlery for the full audience, officials and volunteers rather than only the competitors.
When should I prepare the shopping list for a gymnastics competition?
Make the first shopping list 7 days before the event, after registrations and dietary requirements are known. Do the final stock check 24 hours before setup and buy or collect replacements before the venue opens.
